This trip focuses on the emigration and mining history found in the unique South Pass area: the zenith for westbound emigrants on the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express National Historic Trails. The region was a nexus for indigenous peoples, fur trappers, early government explorers, and early homesteaders. Five cycles of boom-and-bust gold, mineral, and ore mining have dotted the landscape with unique historical treasures.
You’ll meet your guide at the overlook about Red Canyon, and will have the opportunity to explore two historic boom towns in Atlantic City and South Pass City, in addition to some off-the-beaten-track gems like beaver ponds recolonizing washes where gold miners once panned or some of the most scenic stretches of the Continental Divide Trail.
