Overview

Mushing is Alaska's state sport, and a great way to get outside and experience Alaska. The dogs themselves are inspiring, from their love of running, their happy, upbeat personalities, to their incredible power. You can't help but love them. This is a truly Alaskan experience, and everyone should try it at least once!

  • Explore the Portage Glacier at your own pace with a self-guided tour
  • Get up close to the Portage Glacier with a boat cruise across Portage Lake
  • Hike the Trail of Blue Ice or explore Portage Valley by bike
  • Enjoy round-trip, hop-on hop-off shuttle transportation from Anchorage

What To Expect

Mush Iditarod sled dogs through the snowy Alaska mountains of Chugach National Forest. Turnagain Pass is the highest point on the road system near Anchorage, and the snow lasts long into the spring, making it the only place in Southcentral Alaska to mush this time of year.

We'll hook up teams of 4-8 dogs and go for a 2.5-mile mush through the Pass. The scenery is incredible, and the weather is generally nice and warm this time of year, no special gear required. Suitable for all ages, and you'll even get the chance to drive the sled if you want!

The tour lasts about 45-50 minutes:

10 minutes of learning to mush, safety briefing, meet and hitch the dogs

30 minutes mushing

5-10 minutes photos, unhitching, thanking and giving snacks to dogs

We're located about 1 hour south of Anchorage in the Turnagain Pass Rest Area area. LOOK AT MAP TAB FOR EXACT LOCATION
