Your tour will take you on a trip through Civil War and Seattle history at Seattle’s historic Grand Army of the Republic cemetery. The Grand Army of the Republic was the nation’s leading organization of Union Civil War veterans. Veterans of the Civil War, men who had fought at Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam and more immigrated with their families to the Seattle area by the thousands in the decades following the war. This tour will tell you some of the captivating and diverse histories of the nearly 500 veterans buried in the more than 125-year-old cemetery. Not only were these men among the heroes we commemorate at battlefields like Gettysburg, but they were also important and influential pioneers in Seattle’s formative decades.
