During the tour, you will visit the birthplace of Dr. Oppenheimer, known as the "Father of the Atomic Bomb," and the sites of the Manhattan Project's origins. The Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the atomic bomb, began in Lower Manhattan in mid-June 1942 when General Leslie Groves established its first office. Dr. Oppenheimer was appointed the project's scientific director in the same year. Along with his team of brilliant scientists and engineers, he oversaw the construction and testing of the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos.
Columbia University was the site of some of the earliest experimental work on the Manhattan Project. The work was pioneered by Enrico Firmi, John Dunning, I.I Rabi and many others.
