Overview

This is a classic Alaskan Adventure. Packrafting is a uniquely Alaskan sport and this introduction will give you an insight into the ingenuity of these boats in the Alaskan landscape. Conveniently located around the bend from Anchorage lies the Knik valley, home to the Knik Glacier and River. This tour includes a hike up the braided Knik River to the terminus of the Knik Glacier, where we will stop for lunch before blowing up our packrafts and assembling our gear for a float around Knik's terminus lake looking at icebergs and learning more about glaciology. After we are done floating around the lake and practicing our paddling maneuvers, we will paddle the Knik River to back to the starting point of our adventure. This can be booked as a private tour with a minimum of 4 participants. We can also customize this tour to include camping for multiple days. What To Expect

This is a classic Alaskan tour and great for those who want to learn more about hiking and packrafting in Alaska. Hiking and paddling are two activities that go well together with the use of ingenuities pack rafts. Our hiking route will follow the braided Knik River up to the glacier's terminus and lake. On our hike we will have an open view of the mountains that surround Knik Valley. It is common to see Moose, Black bears, and Dall Sheep. The braided river provides us with a natural route that will include low level river crossings and very little bushwhacking. Braided rivers are often preferred features for hiking and trekking off trail in Alaska because of their open views and relatively flat and easy terrain.
Pack rafts are incredible boats that are great for both floating flat water and paddling white water. They are small and packable for the hiking portion of the trip and you will receive instruction on how to assemble and maneuver your boat as we float around the lake. Safety is our first priority and you will be given a safety talk with rules for safely observing the ice and paddling the river. The river is rated beginner, Class I/II. This is a classic Alaskan adventure!
