The most famous ghostly story related to the Tennessee State Capitol involves its architect, William Strickland. He designed and oversaw the construction of the building but passed away before its completion in 1854. Legend has it that Strickland’s ghost haunts the capitol, possibly because he was buried in the building’s north facade, as per his request. Visitors and employees have claimed to hear footsteps echoing in empty hallways, attributed to Strickland’s spirit.
