The best-known segment of the river (formally the Lower Salt River) is located about 40 minutes from downtown Phoenix in Mesa, where visitors and locals go to explore the beautiful Sonoran Desert landscape.

The Lower Salt River is located within the Tonto National Forest. The Tonto National forest is home to over 400 vertebrate species and has a rich history of several prehistoric Indian groups who hunted and gathered along the Salt and Verde River.
