Kayak from James City County Marina on calm water, Powhatan Creek and Back River, to Jamestown Island, known as the birthplace of America with the first successful English settlement in America dating back to 1607. This trip offers stunning views with lush marsh grasses, spectacular cypress trees, bald eagles and other wildlife. Try an early morning time for a peaceful trip and get a feel for what this area might have looked like when settled by the Virginia Company. The tour makes two stops to discuss and admire the fauna and flora as well as discuss the history of the Jamestown Settlement, archeologic discoveries, and the Powhatan Chiefdom that had earlier used Jamestown Island as hunting land. Powhatan Creek and Back River are stunning with lush marsh grasses, bald eagles soaring above and spectacular cypress trees. You can get a feel for what the land looked like when this area was first settled in 1607 by the Virginia Company. The tour makes two stops behind Jamestown Island to discuss and admire the fauna and flora as well as discuss the history of the Jamestown Settlement, archeologic discoveries including the Fourth Church tower that is the only above-ground 17th-century structure still standing in Jamestown, and the Powhatan Nation that had used Jamestown Island as hunting land before the English settlers established their fort.
